Help! KRAMFORS Sofa

April 15, 2010 ~ Help!

Chiara from New York send us an email asking for our help since we might know the answer to her problem. Here is what she wrote:

I have a burning question that so far the internet has given me mixed reviews – was wondering if maybe you or other readers might know the answer to it!

I have a Kramfors leather couch that I bought in 2005.  I’m moving at the end of this month and would LOVE to take it with me, but the wear on the leather is pretty bad :/  I know that the Kramfors covers are made just for the cloth version of the couch, but I’m wondering if it’s possible to use them to cover the leather ones!

I’ve written to Ikea and one other company that makes custom covers for the Kramfors line and both returned with a “no”.  However, upon searching around the web, I found a couple of people who said it was difficult but they were able to pull it off!

Any thoughts?

Since I don’t own a KRAMFORS Sofa I can only assume.

Normally leather sofas are stapled to the frame so the leather won’t wrinkle or move from its place. I’m sure you can pull it off, but don’t think it’s the best option. Fabric sofas use velcro.

I think you can use a cover directly on a leather sofa but may have to improvise so it doesn’t look loose below. What do you think? What would you do?

I own a fabric Kramfors, and the fabric is held on by both velcro and the metal frame. Maybe the metal frame is enough to keep the cover on?

Apart from that there are lots of problems with the leather Kramfors, maybe you can turn to IKEA for some form of warranty?

Actually, the couch has been fabulous to me – bought it in the as-is section 5 years ago and is still firm and comfy! The problem is that I had a roommate with cat that scratched it all up :/ I wish I could keep it (since they don’t make this version, anymore) but I don’t even think I can take it apart, which would make the move all the more challenging. Thanks though, Martijn!

I have the same problem with my Kramfors leather sofa and I found this upon browsing the web.

They seem to be located in Australia but maybe You can contact them for further advice…

Hi, this is Rachel from Comfort Works! Thanks Nev for pointing people to the right direction =)

We’ve received quite a few enquiries regarding reupholstering the leather sofas, and understand the frustration of wanting to save the frame while updating the covers. Although we have leather slipcovers to fit Ikea’s fabric sofas, we are still trying to find a way to have fabric slipcovers (or leather slipcovers, if you prefer) to fit perfectly on Ikea’s “un-removable” leather sofas.

Rest assured we will do our utmost to ensure we find a solution to your slipcover quandary.

I have the same problem with the Kramfors leather sofa. My cat’s scratched it to pieces in no time. I asked around and was told that the fabric slip covers wouldn’t fit. However,a being stubborn and determined, I bought a gray cover. The sofa cover itself went on very easily. You have to fold it up a bit at the bottom, but looks fine. You could probably use double sided tape, and it would look perfect. The cushions were more difficult. I had to remove the leather covers – took about 2 hours. Then the fabric covers fit. The only real problem is that there is no velcro on the bottom of the cusions, so they tend to slip a little, and I have to puch them back in place every day. It looks decent, and the cats haven’t done it in.

So it seems that after all you actually can use a fabric cover for the leather version.

Lucinda, you may want to buy two strips of velcro for the bottom of the cushions so they won’t slip off the sofa.

Quick question for Lucinda… did you buy your fabric covers at Comfort Works, or did you use Bemz? My poor leather is on its last leg and I’m willing to wrestle with removing the leather cushion covers!

Good effort Lucinda!
We at Comfort Works have also been experimenting a little bit on how to get this right.

Our production team actually figured out the best way to reupholster the Kramfors leather sofas with its original cover intact (I personally also tried to remove the cushion myself–and boy it was tough!). Basically, we sew the covers a few mm wider and we’ve also managed to make the cushions non-slip by using pre-attached velcro strips.

Feel free to email me if you want to find out more. My email is rachel (at) comfortworks (dot) com.au.

So, I have 2 kramfors sofas and 1 loveseat all leather. after about 1 year they started to come undone at the seams. I bought 1 kramfors cover for 1 of the sofas (kvilla).FABRIC COVERS DO FIT KRAMFORS LEATHER SOFAS!!! YAY! I removed the frame from the sofa and then put the cover on, then put the frame back on. This held the cover itself in place. I put the leather cushions in the corresponding cushion covers as well without taking them out of the leather themselves. I bought heavy duty strips of velcro and attached 1 to the bottom of each cushion with fabric glue and to the sofa bottom as well. this has worked perfectly for me. it holds them in place and looks awesome. i bought the fabric glue at a crafts store for about $4.00….so i hope this helps those who are looking to cover these amazing and expensive sofas!

I had an Ikea Kramfors leather sofa but it has since died. I had custom made microsuede covers made for it (in a sage green) out of crypton fabric (cryptonfabric.com – bacteria and stain resistant). Still have the covers if anyone is interested in buying them. One of the cushion zippers needs to be replaced but it is zipped & velcro’d on and looks fantastic.

Hi Leslie, how much are you asking for the covers? Do they work well on the leather without sliding off?
Wondering what part of the world you live in ;o)

the kram fors sofa has been recalled, you can get store credit to replace them, thats what im in the process of doing, they have a ten year warrenty. the issue is with stiching and leather quality.

December 9, 2010

Hi all! We’ve been very focused on the Kramfors fabric slipcovers lately, but that’s not all we’ve been up to.

After a long and hard search, we have finally sourced a suitable new supplier for our beautiful leather Modena range. One that looks and feel 95% identical to your original Kramfors leather.

FYI, Comfort Works does custom orders which means you can choose to cover just your leather seat cushion only.

Get in touch with us and order swatches to ensure you get just the leather you’re after.

Comment to Sai – do you have any info you can point to on the Kramfors recall through Ikea?

I spoke to IKEA, and they said they have no recall on it
and the Kramfors sofa’s were discontinued in 2009.

I have the Kramfors leather sectional and my leather is peeling in one place (on the seat back) and it looks scraped off in another area. Has anyone had any luck with ikea and this warranty you speak of? I am so sad aabout this couch. I also will note, that the sofa part of the sectional is not nearly as secure to the frame as the chaise part. And you really need to keep a journal as to where you sit each day so you can wear the cushion evenly.

Hi guys! I have two Kramfors chaise lounges, a right and a left arm. One is leather and one is fabric …. And I don’t know if any of you know this, but my leather cushion, has zippers. So removing the leather cover is easy. And I also tried fitting my fabric cover over both the leather frame and cushion and they fit perfectly! Maybe though it’s because the fabric cover has loosen up a little over the years but it fits wonderfully.

The only problem though is what everyone has mentioned. The leather frame has no velcro at the bottom which I think can be easily solved by stapling velcro to the bottom of the frame. I will be ordering my covers from Comfort Works soon and I won’t even ask for the leather slipcovers because if they sew it a couple of mm wider, I am afraid it might look too loose on the Kramfors :)

We have the Kramfors loveseat and 2 sectional couches in leather. We have one leather seating cushion where the stitching is ripping. We brought it to our IKEA store tonight and they told us they would take it all back under warranty and give us a refund if we have our receipt still. If no receipt, they will give us store credit for the total purchase. Sweet!

KRAMFORS–I had the same experience as smamaya. I keep receipts. Got full store credit. I have an older Ikea couch in green that lasted the growing up of three of the 4 kids and 2 dogs and still looks beautiful and is still in use. Ikea has nothing like KRAMFORS at the moment. I will wait. They’ll come out with something. In the meantime, if I could just get cushion covers that would fit over the decaying leather…
