Ikea Solar Panels

August 25, 2008 ~ Other

Ikea plans to invest in clean-technology within the next five years introducing green goods such as solar panels.

Ikea started supporting sustainability selling energy saving bulbs, eliminating checkout plastic bags, creating pre-fab homes (see the BoKlok article), etc. and now they want to commercialize new and affordable green technologies.

Isn’t it great? You can read the entire article here.

Too bad the timing for the BoKlok project was off, it had a lot of potential. Interestingly Sears did “Kit” homes shortly before the Great Depression, they also handled the mortgages which was a disaster for them when the economy tanked.

Very excited about GreenTech though! I’ve always been a huge proponent of solar, but the barrier to entry has been too high, and it’s tough to generate decent economy of scale when so many people hold off ’cause the payback time is so long and the prices are slowly falling. IKEA’s got the manufacturing muscle that they may be able to break that cycle. Exciting stuff!
