I've owned a 4x4 for more than a year and it's all the desk/shelf space I need. I have my desk mounted to the side so the whole set could be placed on the corner or the room. You can detach the desk pieces but you will need to disassemble the 2 pieces of board that make the desk. You can connect the desk to a 4×2, 4×3, 4×4 bookshelf.
